Breast reduction surgeryClickBreast reduction surgery lasts between 2 and 3 hours under general anesthesia. You will need to spend a night in the hospital after the procedure. Although there are different techniques, normally the surgeon makes anchor-shaped incisions around the areola. Through these incisions the excess skin, fat and breast tissue are removed and the areola and nipple are placed in their new position. In most breast reduction cases the areola stays connected to its blood vessels and nerves, but in some cases where the breasts are greatly reduced, it may be necessary to completely separate the areola and place it in a new position. After breast reduction a bandage that the patient must wear for two or three days is placed around the breasts.
After breast reduction surgeryClickYou may notice some fatigue after breast reduction surgery but you will be able to go back to normal activities after 24 to 48 hours. Most of the discomfort can be controlled with medication, although the breasts can ache for a couple of weeks; the first menstrual period after a breast reduction can cause breasts to swell and ache. The bandage will be removed after three days and be substituted by a special bra. Today, thanks to technological advances, the number of external stitches needed has been greatly reduced, so for most patients all of the stitches can be internal and eliminated without having to be removed.A burning sensation and a reduction in nipple sensitivity during the first few weeks is normal. It there are stitches, they will be removed between 7 and 14 days after the procedure. After a breast reduction procedure you can go back to work in two or three weeks although the swelling does not completely go away until 3 to 6 weeks after the procedure. However, you should limit strenuous physical activities for a few weeks, until you recover from the operation, and for 1 or 2 weeks sexual activity should be avoided to limit swelling of the incisions.
ResultsClickBreast reduction surgery achieves surprising and extremely satisfactory results in patients who experience a major improvement in their daily lives and in their appearance. The procedure can leave permanent visible scars although the surgeon will do everything he can to make them as unnoticeable as possible. Healing problems are much more common in smokers. Over time, the scars will become less noticeable, they will lighten and become less visible by themselves. This process normally takes a year and during that time your surgeon will recommend steps to take in order to improve the look of your scars. Some patients may notice a partial, or in some cases, total, reduction in nipple sensitivity after a breast reduction. This is normally a temporary situation, except in cases where the breast has been greatly reduced, where it may be permanent. The capacity to breast feed can also be affected. After a breast reduction procedure a few months will go by before the breasts reach their definitive appearance; although the breasts will change due to normal hormonal stimuli, pregnancy, or weight changes.
