Ear pinning surgery is used to correct prominent or protruding ears.
Who would make a good candidate for ear pinning surgery?
Ear pinning surgeryClickNormally an incision is made behind the ear, leaving an almost invisible scar. From this incision the surgeon sculpts the ear cartilage making it fold in the right places, reducing the depth of the shell and drying out the excess skin, if necessary.Depending on the age of the patient being treated, ear pinning surgery can be performed under general or local anesthesia. It normally takes between 45 minutes and an hour.
After ear pinning surgeryClickAfter ear pinning surgery a bandage is placed over the area that shapes each part of the ear to allow it to cure in its correct location.Once it has been removed, wearing a tennis band at night for one or two weeks in often recommended to avoid ears from folding forward during the night.
The results of an ear pinning procedure are permanent and do not change over the years. Adjustments are rarely needed and complications relating to the skin or the cartilage are extremely rare.
